The Longstanding Effects of Myth

This myth was for the ancient people to learn how to behave and act in their day; however, it still has immense influence in the 21st century. From tattoos to literature to psychology, the myth of Icarus and Daedalus left a lasting impression on many who read its contents. In tattoos and expressions like "flying too close to the sun," we can illustrate themes of ambition, the fall, risk-taking, and aspiration. As for literature and psychology, we can examine the "Icarus complex." Coined by psychologist Carl Jung, the "Icarus Complex" refers to the human condition of wanting to rise to new heights but the risk of failing due to a disregard for limitations. This story of Icarus also sheds new light on the narcissist complex by showing the ideal of only taking our own words as truth. This myth heavily influences these complexes, giving many psychologists and readers the ability to analyze their own and others' lives in relation to hubris. Ultimately, this myth has a profound and lasting impact on art, psychology, and self-reflection, influencing those across generations and cultures.
